Recently had a chance to try out Alamexo due to it being on the list for dine around event. The first impression of Alamexo is that it is a very well kept restaurant giving off a little bit more of a classy environment. The waiters and waitresses were great through out the entire experience. For example my water was never low. Something that I always have trouble with at other restaurants. I went on a double date to the restaurant and ended up ordering the tostadas, flautas and the tres leches cake. My girlfriend ended up getting the same except for her entree she got the shrimp enchilada. I loved every bite of the meal from the appetizing tostada that had plenty of everything on it from the corn tortilla to the chicken and beans. Prior to receiving my appetizer our friend Picked out the guacamole with chips and the guacamole was very delicious and set the mood for the entire experience. Going back to the tostadas it had just enough food on it to not make me too full. The next item that came out was the flautas they were the vegetarian option and honestly everything on it was exceptional. I would have rather ordered it without the mole as it seemed to overwhelm the dish. Lastly for the dessert course we ordered the tres leches and our friends ordered the cake as well as the plantains. On top of that we ended the night with French pressed coffee and churros. The dessert was pretty simple and straight to the point. The coffee was the same. Overall the entire meal was delicious and I would definitely come back for more.

I'm just going to say it ... I'm in love with Alamexo. IN. LOVE. And here is why... Beautiful ambiance, great service, amazing food. Favorites include... -Table-side guac...best guac ever. Period. They make it at your table and pack it with fresh veggies and cilantro. It's so delicious. -Carne Asada Tacos...I would eat these every day if I could. They are SO flavorful, and the meat is very tender. Hands down the best carne Asada I've ever had. -Enchiladas Suizas...creamy and flavorful. The chicken is cooked perfectly. The entire menu is gluten free. Everything sounds delicious. We keep going back to try new things and are never disappointed. The complimentary churros at the end of every meal are yummy. My only complaint is that their drink cups are so small and require frequent refills. Luckily the service is good and they are on top of things.

Stopped by Alamexo for lunch on a weekday. It was a fantastic experience. The atmosphere of the restaurant is fantastic - one of my favorite downtown in this price range. It is very mex-chic and the space is super well designed. The lunch menu isn't huge, but has something for everyone I eat with. We started with the guac, which they make at the table - it was obviously fresh and tasted fantastic. You can customize it to be mild, medium or hot ... we went with medium but in the future I think I'll go with hot. Their chips are delicious (which is a big thing for me at Mexican restaurants) and the salsa is super tasty, a little unique but has a great kick and great flavor. I had the enchilada suizas - they were fantastic and the perfect amount of food to fill me up. They come with rice and beans on the side which were also great. My co-worker ordered another type of enchilada and she also loved hers. They brought us a complimentary small dessert (like a chip with honey on it? now sure what it was called) which was so nice of them and a delicious treat. It isn't the cheapest lunch down town but the enchiladas were $13 ish and for the food quality, good service and awesome atmosphere - I think it is totally worth it. I will definitely be back!

Plenty has been said about the stellar service here by I'll chime in. I have a lot of food allergies and eating out is a pain. For me and for the staff, I'm sure. It causes me a great deal of anxiety to eat somewhere new without thoroughly researching the menu and asking a ton of questions. When I found out Alamexo was the destination for a family birthday dinner, I had a mild panic attack seeing all the mole and other potential allergens on the menu. When we arrived, I told our server what was up and she immediately went back to talk to the chef before suggesting anything. She came back with 4 options on the menu for me to choose from that were safe, and said she would make doubly sure try remembered my allergies when they made my dish. I was also sadly informed not to eat the chips, but they brought me my own salsa (to avoid cross contamination) and a plate of sliced jicama. I truly felt like a treasured guest and not a burden at all, which is not how this allergy thing usually goes at most restaurants. I had the chicken tacos. As you can see by the many many photos, the presentation is nice. Tasted great, too. The food was fantastic, but I will never forget the wonderful service I received. I would not hesitate to come back again.

I honestly didn't think anyone could improve on the already good carne asada. But their take was pretty amazing. I especially loved how it was plated and presented. This place is s little more fancy feeling than say Red Iguana, but not so upscale that you feel underdressed if dining out before s movie or something else casual.

First visit today and was pleased with the Tacos De Pato Y Salsa Habanero appetizer. Nice and tasty with a Casadores margarita. Tacos De Pato Y Salsa Habanero 13.95 Roasted pulled duck on soft corn tortillas topped with yellow pepper habanero cream salsa

This place is more of a modern Mexican cuisine. Food is pretty good overall and will fill you up without having a ton of leftovers. It's a little pricer than most Mexican restaurants but it's worth it for a special night or date. Their fish tacos are delicious and very filling. You could probably share them if you're not that hungry. The enchiladas suizas as are the bomb too. You can't go wrong with those. The table side made guacamole is great too. FYI, if you like hot salsas ask them for a side of the really hot salsa for your chips or food. It's got quite a kick.

It was average. Service was good. Neat decor. A bit on the loud side We had the table side guacamole. It was good. They need better tortilla chips - better for dipping and more flavor/salt. My wife had enchiladas Rojas con queso y aguacate. She liked them. I had enchiladas mole poblano. Poblano sauce was very flavorful. The pork was a bit on the bland side. Our meal concluded with the complementary churros. Those were wonderful.

"Remember the Alamexo!" is now the rallying cry for a noble cuisine degraded in the name of costly dining. The meal we had at Alamexo ranks as one of the most disappointing in memory. Forget the narrative, because this story has no good ending; I'm going straight to bullet points: - Fresh guacamole is good. I have, in fact, tried to screw it up. It's hard to do. - Fried plantains are also good, especially when they're nicely caramelized and drizzled with crema. - I would, under no circumstances, describe the thing they served us under the label, "Ceviche del Dia," as ceviche. But since that is what they called it, I'll go ahead and name it as the single worst ceviche I have ever had. For $13 we received a small cocktail glass filled with fully over-cooked shrimp in a wan liquid with some onion, peppers, and mango. There was no real acid to it and no denying the travesty of the seafood. The thought that I was less than two miles from Del Mar or Mi Lindo Nayarit made me weep as I ate. - Cochinita Pibil is one of the greatest dishes ever devised. It is the glorious sum of so many parts, but Alamexo's was little more than a bland mound of ruddy colored pork. Admittedly, the table was full of folks who'd last eaten it at a family table in Mexico, but even the version served at Red Iguana is vastly superior. - When it comes to mole poblano, you can have a useful hint of bitterness from the chocolate and the chiles, or you can have a monotone burnt bitterness from a whole lot gone wrong. Alamexo's mole poblano was unpleasant and oppressive after the first bite, and the cubes of pork within the enchiladas had nothing to add to the sad affair. - The chicken dish was the table winner by attrition. It was a nicely cooked bird in a tasty pipian verde sauce. I recall ZY fondly, and I've long wanted to try Alamexo. Four of us finally did, and for $125 (pre-tip and without alcohol) we enjoyed some surprisingly bad food. In the future, when I am asked about Mexican food in Salt Lake City I will Remember the Alamexo and forget to mention it at all.

This place is definitely a new favorite. It's definitely not your average hole in the wall Mexican place. It's very upscale and modern so I wasn't sure what to expect with the food. We started with table side guac made Hot and it sure was Hot and very good. Then we had carne asada tacos and the enchilada suizas! Both way better than expected. Flavorful, tangy, good portion size for the price. We both took food home. The rice and beans were not our favorite. We expected Mexican rice and got some weird pilaf but whatever. The churros they give you are so so good. We will be coming back

The atmosphere is light and airy, clean and new. Ingredients fresh. The tortilla soup is excellent. Tomato based broth that is poured over shredded chicken, cheese and avocado (could use more avocado). Homemade chips light and crispy and the salsa has a kick. Would've ordered the guac but it's so huge I couldn't eat it by myself! The Alamexo margarita is different but really fresh and tangy!

Loved the enchiladas suizas, very fresh and comes with two. Guacamole was perfect. The complimentary churros are my favorite above everything, wish I could've ordered more!

I've passed by this place hundreds of times and hadn't yet tried it. Tonight we were waiting to eat next door but when I walked by Alamexo and smelled the aroma, I called an audible and we were lucky they could fit us in with a short wait. I'm glad I made that call. This was an awesome dining experience. I love the location and the building is awesome with the high ceilings and tall windows and it's got a nice environment. Our server Zach was really good. I love it when he shared the specials with passion and when he described the ceviche, we had to order it. Great choice. Lots of fresh yellow tail tuna with lime and habanero. So good. Our entrees were even better. The SALMON MANCHAMANTELES is a unique dish with so many flavors. The mole is a red sweet mole and the salmon is cooked so well with a crispy exterior but not dry at all. My wife had the mole poblano and it was really good. And even the rice and beans that came with the entrees were totally really good. The beans are a refried black bean that I would buy as a side if it weren't included. Really good. We love Frida Bistro and this is similarly priced with a gourmet Mexican menu. But it's different enough from Frida and both are fantastic. I disagree with the few who think either restaurant is overpriced. For the service and uniqueness of the menu and the portions they offer, it's a great value.

Alamexo is an interesting and rare commodity in the SLC downtown area, a high end Mexican restaurant with a New American twist. It's as if Rick Bayless himself decided to open for business in the heart of Salt Lake. Located on State Street between 2nd and 3rd South, Alamexo provides an interesting alternative to Red Iguana, and serves as a quality competitor to Frida Bistro. My recent experience at Alamexo on Cinco de Mayo (also known as my birthday) can be considered an unqualified success. Walking into the space, you get a feeling that you are in the atrium of a large building. The ceilings in some places are exceptionally high, creating the effect that you are somehow connected to the city outside. The drawback is that the echoing noise from your fellow patrons can effectively drown out conversation, but that's what one can usually expect from a popular restaurant. Overall, the location and atmosphere are both pluses. The chef at Alamexo has obviously a deep understanding of the favors of Mexican cuisine, and marries them nicely with unexpected ingredients. We tried the tortilla soup and the ceviche as appetizers. Both were exceptional, with the tortilla soup especially being one of the best I have tried. The entrees for the evening were the chile rellenos and the pork enchiladas. The rellenos really surprised me. I'm accustomed to this particular dish being a gutbomb, consisting of fried chiles stuffed generously with gobs of melted cheese. Not the case here! The chiles were not fried, and were stuffed with cremini mushrooms and spinach. The chiles were topped with a lovely, light tomato sauce and a generous sprinkling of cheese. I found this dish to be extremely appetizing. The enchiladas were equally delicious, with the mole sauce being a highlight (every bit as good as Red Iguana). The most surprising aspect of the meal was that it was, by and large, made from healthy, fresh ingredients. You will not leave Alamexo with the usual queasiness associated with places like La Frontera. Alamexo deserves to be recognized as one of the better fine dining options in SLC. This diner, for one, wholeheartedly endorses it for his fellow Yelpers!

Great atmosphere, great service and on top of all that the food was super fresh and delicious. The table side guac was excellent I'd highly recommend it. I'm gunna take my girlfriend from Southern California to this place and I know she'll be impressed.

Excellent atmosphere and amazing food. This is one of the best Mexican places that I have had in Salt Lake. The Ceviche is stellar, salmon tasty and churros were delicious. I can not wait to go back and try something else.

I came here with a big group from work - about 25 people. I was really impressed with the attentiveness of the staff, and how fast things came out considering the size of our group. Drinks came out as we ordered them, with a very short wait. On the topic of drinks, the margaritas were spectacular. The appetizers were pretty decent. The chips are great, the salsa is flavorful, and the guacamole fresh and tasty. We ordered queso, and it was the slightest bit greasy for my taste though the cheese was great quality. The ceviche was a little disappointing - it was mostly apples which took away from the texture of the fish, which there weren't many pieces of. I ordered the Guajillo & garlic marinated scallops & shrimp entree, and was pretty unimpressed. The few scallops were tender and delicious, but the shrimp was rubbery and the cheesy rice it was served on was almost unbearably salty. The side of sweet plantains were really tasty. Crisp and sprinked with mexican white cheese. Others at the table ordered Enchiladas Suiza, Mole, and Tortilla soup and those dishes seemed to be well reviewed. We ordered two desserts - chocolate tamales and tres leches cake. Both were ok, but nothing special. On the other hand the complimentary churros were amazing - warm, fluffy, and perfectly spiced. All in all this restaurant is new and worth checking out. Hopefully they work out the kinks over the next few months.

I went on a Friday evening, and the restaurant was a little empty. I was greeted by our server, Cassidy, who did a splendid job. The order of guacamole made tableside was a fun novelty, but I found it to be slightly salty. With my pescado (fish) tacos, I found the breading a little pasty but the tomato sauce beneath was flavorful. The rice was delicious, but the beans had a strange acidity flavor. Overall, it was a nice experience, but there are some flaws that can be improved.

The guacamole lacked seasoning and the fish tacos were horrible. Tasted worse than frozen fish sticks. The mojito didn't have flavor. I would recommend taqueria 27 over this any day!

Excellent food. Excellent atmosphere. The service was prompt, attentive and knowledgeable about the preparation of the dishes. We had high hopes for this place and it lived up to all of them. We plan on visiting Alamexo regularly.

Surprisingly great Mexican food. I am a Mexican and TexMex junkie and thought this place was great. Well thought out dishes with great flavors. Margaritas were with quality juices and Tequilas. All salsas were fresh and ranged from mild chipotle to flaming habanero. Service also was great. Not too fancy a locale but you will get an upscale Mexican dinner. Enjoy!

Great real Mexican food the Chef adds in great flavored. The salsa has a wonderful roasted pepper taste. All the food was great. The ice cream with the chocolate sauce has a real spicy kick. Very unexpected. Still very good. I will return again and again. The service was first class. The guacamole was made in front of us. Delicious! Our drinks never were emptied. They were great with customer service. The restaurant was busy but it was not loud. Nice way to get rid of extra noise. I don't hear so I hate loud restaurants. Even though the tables were close, the noise level was very good. I recommend this restaurant.

Living in Mexico for a few years made me appreciate mole. Loved their mole and tortilla soup. Guacamole was massive and recommended. You pay for the atmosphere but good food and great ambiance.

Service was okay, in the beginning, but it took forever to get our check in the end. I know what good, authentic, Mexican food tastes like... and the food here doesn't come close! It's overpriced and I feel like they try to make what should be a simple, delicious dish into something super fancy. fail! I wouldn't come back here nor would I recommend anyone else to, either.

I've been wanting to try Alamexo for quite some time, and they are participating in the dine o' round, so it was a no brainer to choose this place for dinner last night. (The dine o' round is when local restaurants in Salt Lake City craft a special lunch/dinner menu at a more discounted price than their regular menu items.) Because this is a nicer dining establishment, we were nervous about bringing a toddler, but the staff didn't seem bothered at all. There was a high chair upon request and the staff accommodated our dairy allergy. They made sure to put any sauces on the side because of the dairy allergy, and the server was very knowledgable about the menu items. I ordered the tostada as an appetizer, baby shrimp enchilada for the entree, and the tres leches for dessert from the dine o' round menu. I loved the tostada, the enchilada's sauce was a little too salty for me, and the tres leches was definitely too hard and not moist enough. The complimentary churros at the end of the meal was probably a better choice for dessert than the tres leches--this was the consensus for everyone at the table. There were a lot of pros with my experience at Alamexo last night. I really liked the service, decor, and portions/plating of food. The only thing I would note is the idea behind all of the dishes were awesome, but the execution may have been slightly off for the prices they are charging. I am not one to shy away from paying more for good food, but for example.. the bananas were sour in our plantains dessert. Maybe the dine o' round menu needs a little work, because the beef enchilada was ordered off their regular dinner menu and it was really good. I will definitely consider coming back to give this place another try.

Alamexo puts a high-end creative twist on Mexican food. Far from traditional, the restaurant appeals to the inner gourmet lurking in its patrons. As many others have mentioned, the servers will encourage you to start the meal with the tableside guac. They will make it to your specifications. I asked for my guac to be spicy. Despite adding several jalapenos, it was rather bland. It could have used more salt too. While prepared fresh in front of my eyes, I think the guac is overpriced. If my memory serves me correctly, this is a $10.95 appetizer - yes, for guac and chips. I don't know that I'd spring for that again. The dinner menu has several items to choose from. I selected the enchiladas of the day. They were okay but the highlight was the rice and black beans that accompany the meal. The beans were well-seasoned and the rice was cooked to perfection. If I return, I would be happy with the sides alone! I will say, my server was extremely pleasant. He was very attentive and made sure my water was filled at all times. I also loved the complimentary churro at the end of the meal. Just the perfect size for a sweet treat.

We ordered 2 entrees and they forgot 2 give us rice & beans, which come with the meals. The enchiladas mole was not as good as the Red Iguana I wouldn't recommend ordering it. The enchilada suizas was good but for $18?. The best part of the place is the ambiance. The chips with the guacamole were average. Not fresh. Not hot. They taster like store bought chips.

This place is great! A little phoned-in, since there aren't really any upscale Mexican places in Salt Lake besides Frida Bistro and mayyyyyybe Blue Iguana, but even then those are in slightly different spaces (less slick and more cozy), so no heavy competition for these guys. But I really appreciate Alamexo's effort to bring fine Mexican into a sleek upscale level, and they more or less succeed. The tableside guac is definitely awesome, and the various taco dishes are pretty solid--I had one with carne and my partner had one with pescado. And the michelada was awesome--made with a dash of tequila? BRILLIANT. Don't expect it to blow you away, but it's a solid choice for a night out, and won't break the bank.

Mother's Day is always an exercise in disappointment (two teenagers who don't register the importance of expressing appreciation) so our dinner at Alamexo fit right in with the day's theme. It was a pretty space, and the service was good, but the food? Well, here's the thing: when you bring home leftovers and you're not particularly interested in eating them the next day, you know something is wrong. The giant mocajete in the middle of the table plants a strong suggestion to order the table-side guacamole, and we succumbed. The chips were nice and fresh but the guac lacked flavor. I guess I'm used to putting garlic in mine. Trying to be quasi-healthy, I had the Baja fish tacos as my entree. Now this may be because I'm new in town, but every other Baja fish taco I've had featured grilled fish -- this one was fried. Imagine four bland fried fish sticks in a tortilla and you get the idea. Even my house margarita was served without salt. So in general it was a pretty bland experience, flavor-wise, which is not typically what one is looking for in a Mexican restaurant. Go to Frida's instead.

Here's a lesson in focus. And a side lesson in timing, preparation, hard work, and then awesomeness. First of all, focus: This restaurant used to be called Zy. It was good. Quite good. But the chef came from a background of creative Mexican food, and Zy was New American. It was terrific, but you just have to listen to your inner self and focus on what's most important. That's what Chef Matt Lake did. He knew it would be painful to shift focus--that he'd have to shut things down for a while, but he followed his heart and closed Zy to open Alamexo. On timing: That kind of transition takes time. In his case it was only a matter of days. A miracle turnaround that surprised just about everyone. Sometimes those things can take forever, but again, if you know what the focus is, you can accomplish a lot. Still, I'm glad they took the time they needed. They didn't let anyone say it had to be a certain amount of time- I say take whatever time you need. But do the work you need to in the time you're closed. They did just that. On the one hand, they could have rushed things along in the name of making it happen. But on the other, sometimes it's not going to be perfect. I visited during soft opening, and there were still some rough edges. But best you just open up and see what they are and stay open to making changes on the go. That brings us to hard work: Changing things over takes time. They changed the decor, the sign, worked on the menu, the staff issues, and made it happen. It was hard work. And they didn't back away from the challenge. Finally, awesomeness: So, this isn't a review of what was. This is a review of what is. And oh boy, boys and girls. This is the real thing. It's upscale Mexican, and it's got some real potential to shine quite brightly. When the right people come together with the right focus, it doesn't matter as much what was, only what is. It's warm, it's not so fancy you're intimidated, and it's some tasty menu items. The corn--get the corn. The enchiladas Suizas were tart and a little tangy, and definitely creamy. Our table ordered the tableside guac, and it was a fun experience and also delicious. His green salsa is just the right kind of zippy, too. As with any new endeavor, you're going to have some bumps. That's to be expected in the beginning. But the big lesson for me is that it can be done. Things can change. Maybe you need to take a little time and I'm perfectly okay with that transition time. Take whatever time you need, right? Because when it reopens with the genuine focus, it's radness potential is unlimited.

Delicious food- well worth the money! I highly recommend the Escalope y Camarones Ajillo. The arroz con leche that it's served on tastes like risotto. The shrimp and scallops are perfectly seasoned. Their coke here has so much syrup flavor in it! Can't wait to come back.

Fantastic!!! Dined here last night with a party of six (including a 3 year old) and couldn't have been more pleased. Service was top notch...even on a very busy night. Paul was our server and he was a star. He was equally patient with my indecisive mother and daughter :) Ceviche was fresh and delicious. The chicken tacos ordered by Mrs B were off the hook. The fish tacos I ordered were possibly the best fish tacos I've ever had. Everyone in our party enjoyed the food and atmosphere. We will be back! I'm truly perplexed by the 3 star reviews. This place is great!!!

  • Ein W.

I really wanted to love this place, however, it fell short on a couple things. Unfortunately, I can't give this place 3.5 out of 5 (my honest opinion), so I'm forced to go with either a 3 or a 4, and ultimately felt it deserved a 3 over a 4. Here's why... The positives. This place is clean, has a current vibe, nice upscale environment, and with polite servers answering to your every beck and call. You won't find another high-end Mexican restaurant of this caliber in Salt Lake City. If you're celebrating a special occasion, such as wedding reception, or something of that nature, it's a great venue. Dishes are plated like something out of Iron Chef, made with quality fresh ingredients, and well portioned. The guacamole dip, salsa, and chips are especially tasteful, and a must have appetiser. So why the 3 out of 5 stars? Here's why. Menu is extremely limited. Yes, there are some superb choices, but apart from the addition of appetisers, there's only about 10 entree selections. Most of those are chicken, with the exception of some pork, but if you don't like poultry or are vegetarian/vegan - you're shit out of luck :) Not a big deal? Alright then. The other complaint is the children's menu. Pretty much one choice - plain boring cheese quesadilla. If your kid isn't thrilled by that, you're forced to buy an adult sized meal at full price. So, it's definitely not a "family friendly" restaurant. Take your date but leave the kiddos home. I actually wouldn't recommend this place for children under 18...lol... Still not a big deal? My last complaint is the fact that making money is *obviously* first priority to this establishment. Of course, this is the bottom line of all businesses, but a good business doesn't make that obvious to its customers. My example of this is when our server asked us if we'd like dessert. Like champs, we said, "Hell yeh! Bring it!", and we ordered two dishes. After eating them and upon paying our bill, our server brings out a plate with 4 churros, and says, "Enjoy our complimentary churros!" WTF, lol, could have mentioned you give complimentary churros before offering dessert. Needless to say, this place isn't cheap. Overall, 3 out of 5. Like I said, I'd actually gladly give this place 3.5 out of 5, but alas Yelp doesn't work that way. I probably wouldn't come here again, not out of my way, but if I'm not footing the bill - sure! - nice upscale spot. Just watch out for the hipsters! They swarm the joint in masses, even on a week day, starting about 7pm ;) Cheers!

I've been here twice now and overall really like the food.... If I'm craving enchilada suizas. Those are great! The chicken is very moist and flavorful. Their table side guacamole is really good as well. I'd say my biggest hang up is the limited menu. The few items they do offer are on the funky side, almost trying too hard. Also this for sure is on the pricer side especially for Mexican food. For some reason in my mind Mexican food should be expensive, although I'm not sure why? So yes, the service is great, food is great, free churros at the end of the meal are a nice bonus Just be prepared to pay a little more for not a tremendous selection. Don't get me wrong it's really good and I will go back.

Queso, ceviche, street corn, oh my! Luckily for me, I got to try Alamexo during their soft opening so I got to try a lot of different dishes. They were still working out some bugs (figuring out how to maneuver the guacamole cart around chairs and tables mainly) but the food was solid. Let's talk appetizers. If you read my other reviews, you know I'm in CA (Cheese Anonymous). I am obsessed with cheese and the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem right? Obviously I had to get the queso fundido and it's just downright ooey gooey and cheesy like you'd expect. I also really like the ceviche and it's nice that they change it up. I didn't LOVE the tortilla soup. There was a ton of flavor but it was almost overwhelming. Maybe because I'm used to a lighter brothy tortilla soup. This soup base was a lot thicker, almost like enchilada sauce... I mean, the flavor was wonderful but too heavy for my taste. Okay onto entrees. We tried the Cocinita Pipil tacos, which is achiote & bitter orange marinated pork shoulder. The meat was juicy and had a lot of really great flavors. We went with the soft tacos but crispy shells are also an option. When you go, you need to try the Salmon Monchamanteles at least once. Sure, it's not the least expensive thing on the menu but it is amazing. The salmon is cook perfectly and it just flakes and melts in your mouth. The mole is just incredible and pairs with the salmon quite well. Drooool. At the time that I went, there wasn't a dessert menu yet (I'm not sure if that has changed) but they gave us complimentary churros and wow. Well done. Beautifully crispy on the outside and soft and gooey in the middle. Yum.

Average and too pricey. I ordered the chile rellenos and my husband ordered the mole poblano enchiladas then we split them. The rellenos were ok, but the enchiladas...I had 4 fatty bites in the one enchilada I had. I couldn't eat it anymore. The churros at the end of our meal were good, and our table side guacamole was as well. Can't say I would really recommend this place based on what we had, but maybe something else on the menu would be better. I won't be back; I'll go to Red Iguana.

We stopped in for the soft opening last night and I must say that the food was wonderful. They provided us with a habanero and tomatillo salsa with chips upon arrival and the salsa was delightful. Light, refreshing, tart and slightly sweet and not too hot. We ordered the table side prepared guacamole and it was also well presented, fresh (of course) and delicious. We chose the Mole Poblano, which was thick, deliciuos, properly sweet and savory and the grilled pork was not overwhelmed and added a nice texture and flavor. The second entree was the Pescado con Pipian y Atole and the fish was well prepared and the crab and blue corn crust added a great flavor and texture. As appetizers we ordered the fried plantains with queso fresco and the Flautas. The chicken flautas were very good. The smoke red pepper marinade gave it a great depth and flavor. The plantains were also well prepared and the queso fresco and crema on top also added another depth to otherwise typically predictable dish at other places. No desert tonight as it was a soft opening, but they gave us some complimentary churros and they were very nice and perfectly fried, not overdone. This is a first review of a soft opening. Service was predictably getting used to the new menu and new name and did quite well. I give four stars now and can't wait to go back. Chef Lake is returning somewhat to his roots in NYC and I see a bright future.

This place is awesome. If you're looking for your standard $8.99 Mexican platter of pale refried beans and mystery meat enchiladas, I'll tell you right now: you're going to be disappointed. But if you're looking for Mexican food that's not cooked hours in advance and slapped in the microwave upon order, this is your place. I've been a fan of Chef Lake since he opened Zy. This guy makes everything from scratch, sources only the best ingredients, and makes some of the best food in SLC, but also maintains a low-key attitude about it all. He strikes me as someone who truly loves to cook and create new things, and it shows in his food. Mole prepared daily from scratch? Check. Daily enchilada specials? Check. Ceviche? Check. I had the enchilada del dia, which changes based on what ingredients are fresh and available. Today's were the chicken and avocado enchiladas, accompanied by a chipotle cream sauce that was outstanding. The chicken was perfectly moist and the sauce was perfect. Make sure you get the corn side dish. Sweet corn accompanied with a rich cream sauce, and topped with lime and a bit of chili powder. Simple and delicious. As with Zy, service is top-notch. Not too overbearing and with a great sense of timing throughout the meal. Are you going to pay a bit more to dine at Zy? Yes. But knowing things aren't coming directly out of cans and onto your dinner plate is worth it, IMO.

The carne asada tacos were amazing, and the chips & salsa were fantastic. It's not cheap Mexican food here, but it is a nice change of pace. I'll be back.

For all the hype I hear about ALAMEXO- I hate to say i was disappointed The service was verrrrrrrrry slow. The waiter apologized a few times to us but I still could not understand why it was taking soooo long for everything (everyone around us was doing just fine!) The table side guacamole was a little un thrilling. Needed something... salt and pepper? And go for spicy the medium was not spicy AT ALL The dinner was good- I had the salmon plate that was quite tasty. For all I heard about this place I was expecting to be blown away. The menu was just Eh and the food was just Eh. If you want trendy mexican downtown for higher prices and eh food go here. If you want great mexican in a sketchy area in a run down looking building for cheap- but amazing food with a line out the door every day of the week. I have to say head to Red Iguana! I will not be back to Alamexo= too much mexican in the city to go back to en EH place.

It's just so so. Not impressed. Rather bland. Pricey for what you get. The side table guac is good tho...

I can't rave enough about this restaurant. I love the idea that we can see the waitress showcasing guacamole for us, and the food (enchilada suiza) is awesome. Minus one star for the wait since no one has that much time.

Alamexo is the new kid in town; but not really.. This high end Mexican cuisine concept was once ZY; a completely different (but equally impressive) restaurant with the same owner and chef. And while the old concept was successful, they've decided to take a new path of deliciousness. The table-side guacamole is a great way to start, along with a margarita. I tried the exotic and just-sweet-enough Alamexo Vida Rita, with fresh citrus and jamaica ($10). The menu is full of interesting entrees, along with some limited-time special offerings, which can change rather frequently and keep the menu fresh. My entree of choice, the Salmon Manchamanteles: slow cooked salmon and crispy bananas, pinapple pico de gallo, and mole manchamanteles ($22.95), was both savory and sweet. While it might be tough to decide on just one entree, the staff (in our case, Christian) are very well versed on the menu and can certainly help guide you in the right direction with their recommendations. I don't always save room for dessert, but in the case of the Tamel de Chocolate, I'd say it's an absolute must. Dense, doughy and delicious complimentary mini churros were also served during my visit!

Went here for my birthday with husband and two of our kiddos. We all thought it was just ok. The table side guacamole was missing something--garlic? salt? We asked for medium heat and there was no heat at all. The waitress said something about the fattiness of the avocados counteracting the heat? I have had way better guacamole made at home even. We had shrimp ceviche which we didn't like at all. The green sauce and the pickled onions were all you could taste and it just wasn't a very pleasant taste. The fried plantains were a fun addition, but we just were not fond of the taste of the ceviche. We couldn't taste the shrimp at all. Their tortilla chips were great. I had the enchiladas suizas--chicken enchiladas in a tomatillo cream sauce. While the chicken inside was nicely cooked and very tender, there was nothing but cooked chicken--no sauce, no cheese, just chicken and not a lot of flavor. The green sauce covering the enchiladas was good. It just was not a standout dish. My daughter had the same enchiladas and thought the same. Fine, edible but not worth going back for. The similar dish at Red Iguana is soooooooo much better. My husband had the carne asada tacos. He said they were fine but really salty. Kids' menu is cheese or chicken quesadilla. I did like the churros they brought out at the end of meal. We had four diners and the waitress only brought three, saying she would bring a fourth. She brought our check but never brought a fourth churro. They give you rice a beans with your meal. The rice was fine. The beans were very odd. Almost a truffle taste. I love to try a new restaurant and I feel bad when I haven't much positive to say, but i appreciate reading restaurant reviews that give me an honest picture of their dining experience. Hopefully this was an off night because there are several positive reviews.

Biggest turn off is no parking. If you don't work downtown then good luck finding parking or pay $4 for a hour parking in the garage. I got the lunch torta and it was probably the most Americanized torta. It was the size of bagel. No Buena!

"What have you heard about Alamexo?" "Oh, that the food is really good, but really expensive." I heard this conversation about three times this week, and, while waiting for a movie to start at the Broadway, I thought we might drop in for a drink. So my review begins and ends, pretty much, with the "Bebidas de la casa." We sat at at the "bar," which sort of looked like a bar, and had some liquor bottles backlit with fake candles by it, but is not what you'd think of as a "bar." There's no bartender (probably due to the Zion Curtain law) and no drinks there -- the bar is just used to store silverware and dishes. It was also very dark -- too dark to read the menu, but we were given seats and time to make our choices. I chose the Mezcal Spicel, with mescal reposado, orange, citrus and "cannella" (had to look it up -- it's a citrus liqueur). Since it was National Margarita day, the wife tried one -- though I thought it was the Alamexo rita, it came out a deep reddish color, which doesn't seem to go wit the ingredients. The drinks were both delicious. My Mezcal was really smoky, with strong notes of tobacco. Almost scotch-like. It must have been the mescal, which was quite a pleasant surprise. Yet, it was well balanced with the citrus and sweeter elements. Very manly, and quite tasty. The wife's was also good. The menu lists as an ingredient "jamaica," which must be a typo, (jicama?) though no one did fill us in. Not the most amazing margarita I've ever had, but well balanced and solid. For our food, we chose a bit of dessert -- fried plantains with chocolate and cream. The plantains were cooked very nicely - fried just the right amount on the edges and mushy insides. But there were four, maybe 1/8 plaintain slices in a martini glass with cream, chocolate sauce (that tasted like generic restaurant chocolate sauce) and cotija cheese, served in a martini glass. Easily creatable at home. The real star, for me, was the just-out-of-the-fryer churros that came, complimentary (even though we just had dessert and drinks). Super fresh, nicely crispy with doughy insides. I thought they rivaled Coffee & Doughnuts and the French Laundry. The wife thought they were underdone inside -- they were on the doughy side, but I liked it. The churros raised my rating to four stars. Based on my experience, I'm willing to give Alamexo a try for dinner, but probably only if someone else is buying.

My wife and I went there for a late lunch and enjoyed it very much. It's not your standard fare. Expect Mexican food with more culinary flare, a bit more creative dishes that are lighter and fruitier. We had: 1). Salmon - very nice combination of favors with bananas and a light mole sauce that compliments it well. Pretty presentation. 2). Tamale appetizer - very light and fluffy with a nice corn accented sauce and also a pretty presentation. 3). Chips and salsa were good. Chips were thin and crispy and the salsa was less of a tomato flavor and more of a spicy fruity flavor. My wife liked it a lot I liked it but kind of prefer the chunky tomato version. 4). Beans and rice. Re fried beans were made with black beans which had a nice flavor but I still prefer a quality pinto bean version. Rice was almost a pilaf which had, I think they were pumpkin seeds. I liked it but it's not your standard mex rice. 5). Guacamole was prepared table side and we both thought it was excellent. The presentation was like a fine restaurant and the price reflects that. Prepare for a heavier check than most Mexican food restaurants. I liked it. We will be back to try the other dishes.

Excellent Mexican food. The next step up from Red Iguana... I was really impressed with the creativity of the dishes. I had a short rib enchilada with a mushroom sauce that like nothing I have ever tasted before. Guacamole made table side was very fresh. If you are looking for cheap Mexican you won't find your favorites here but if you are looking fresh ingredients and flavors this is the place !

Delicious, authentic Mexican food. Definitely on the pricier side, but the ambience and relative quality of the food make it worth it in my opinion. Great place for a date! And the free churro brings it all together. Give it a try... Just don't forget your wallet!

Great Mexican food. It's hard to find a high end Mexican restaurant in SLC but they have done it. Their guac, made at the table, is fresh and full of flavor. The chicken salad was delicious.

Table side guacamole is amazing, get it spicy if you like heat! Highly recommend the chicken tacos! The flavor was great and cheese melted on the bottom of the warm skillet. My boyfriend said the fish tacos were cooked perfectly.

A new favorite. For sure! The fresh Guac is so tasty & made right before my eyes. The chips are Delicious too! The fish tacos are fantastic! And the complementary mini churros at the end of the meal definitely hit the spot. Service was very friendly & the environment was clean & comfortable. Alamexo Birthday party of 6 was perfect!

Mother Mole...Yes You May! Based on other recommendations we started with the table-side guacamole. It was good but not spectacular as others have reviewed. But then, the gates of Meixcan heaven were opened and we were bathed in the glory of the Mole Sauce. Specifically the Mole Poblano. Pork carnitas seasoned with avocado leaf, baked in traditional mole poblano, topped with queso fresco, esquites, white onion & toasted sesame seeds. We also had the Enchiladas Del Dia -Chefs daily enchilada special. Tonight is was slow roasted short ribs with baby shrimp in a chipotle quemada salsa, topped with julienned lettuce, jicama & cotija cheese. -Muy Bueno!! All dished are served with bottomless side orders of puree black beans and rice. Not just any beans and rice -both had spectacular flavor. Too full to tempt the dessert menu, we enjoyed the complimentary churros at the end of the meal. So there is a Mexican Heaven...and it's delicious!

Holy Garlic Batman! The garlic in the salsa is pretty amazing. I was visiting with some friends from California. After a few days in SLC, we were going through Mexican food withdrawals, which was pretty serious. To Californians, Mexican food a staple in our diets, kind of like water. We need it at least 3 times a week in some shape or form. But dare we attempt Mexican food in Utah? Oh we dared alright, and we loved it. The food here was fantastic. The salsa was amazing, and the Queso Fundido wasn't big enough (because it was so good, we inhaled that thing before we could even realize what it was we were eating). I ordered the Flautas and the Elotes De Calle. I don't know if I'm going to be making my way back to SLC anytime soon, but I would definitely make a trip back here to order this all over again. They also make a few killer Mezcal cocktails which I also appreciated. The smokiness from the cocktails complimented all the food nicely. Then of course, there is the icing on the cake. COMPLIMENTARY CHURROS! Those are two words that should always paired together!

This place is sooooo over priced. The service was pretty bad. Had to ask the server 3 times for more salsa. I took my parents there. They were very disappointed about the food. It came out cold. Maybe it sat in the window to long???? My plate came out warm. Not hot though. I will not be going back there ever. I have also told everyone I know not to go there. Red Iguana is WAY better, and cheaper.

We made reservations to eat before the show and were surprised by this place. The fresh guacamole was fantastic. The food came extremely fast... almost too fast. I had the fish tacos which were really good. They are served so you build your own tacos.

Fresh guacamole made at your table! Carne asada tacos are awesome. Parking is limited and they don't validate.

Way too pricey for the quality of the food you get... only been here once but our waiter never refilled our drinks at all. I got the chicken enchilada- the sauce is delicious but the chicken should be flavored better. The other got the salmon-again, the sauce was excellent but the salmon could have easily been better with more flavor. All in all I think this place has possible potential... IF they can get the right flavors to work. The food is too expensive regardless. I'd rather eat cafe Rio, both for the quality and the value. -Awesome sauces though

My sisters and I had dinner at Alamexo tonight. The service was great; the waitress offered me a different drink (no extra charge ) when I didn't like what I ordered. The food was good but a little overpriced. The best part of the meal was the guacamole. The server made it fresh at the table and I shamefully admit, I ate almost all of it. If I were to eat there again I would just do chips and guacamole.

Tonight's dinner was delicious. They are still in their soft opening, so things were a bit more leisurely than a usual meal, but certainly not unexpectedly so. The staff could not have been more accommodating and friendly, taking care of my wife, two daughters, and I very quickly when we showed up right at opening. We started the complimentary chips and habanero salsa, which had a pronounced heat that sneaks up, and also with with queso fundido. It's served on a black iron skillet and the baked corners of the dip were my favorite part. We also ordered two sides. The fried plantains were caramel goodness on the outside and creamy and sweet on the inside. When they call these sweet plantains on the menu, they aren't kidding. Had I not known better, I'd have mistaken them for ripe bananas. The second side was the corn. We got it mostly because it sounded like something our girls would eat happily. They barely got a chance. The sweet roasted corn, creamy sauce, chili and lime was pretty much a perfect dish. I was reminded a lot of Eva's brussels sprouts, not because of the flavor profile, but because it might just be the perfect vegetable dish. When we go back, I'll be ordering a plate of this for myself. We had the mole poblano enchilada as our main. My first taste of the dish was to taste the sauce, and I was immediately struck with a strong bitter note. I found that when it was paired with the tortilla and fried pork, however, it was a beautiful and complex combination, and the bitter flavor melded nicely with the other flavors of the sauce. Whether this was intentional or not, I'm not sure. The bitter flavor was something my wife mentioned without my saying anything, The meal ended with delicious, fresh churros. It sounds as if a full dessert menu will be available starting tomorrow, so we'll have to check that out on a subsequent visit.

My friends surprised me and took me here for my birthday. I was really excited to try it after reading some reviews, but I was left a little underwhelmed. We started with their homemade guacamole, which is prepared right at your table. I really liked it, but I always like guacamole. For my entree, I got short rib enchiladas. Here's where I'm a little iffy. Short ribs are supposed to fall apart in your mouth. Delicate, savory, seasoned to perfection. This was not the case with my short ribs. They were tough and chewy. Gross. To top it all off, we were the youngest people in the place. Everyone was at least over 40 and kept giving us weird looks. I'm sorry, but just because I'm in my 20's doesn't mean I'm a nuisance. The service was good, I'll give them that. We had a good time but the food was just okay and I was a little put-out by the ambience.

Okay. Part of my review is just comparing it to what you can else where at about 1/3 the price. $10 for tableside guac was just ridiculous when the guac was very average. Fresh, but average. The rest of the food was good, there is no denying that. But not good enough to pay what you pay for mexican food.

Finally, someone realized there's a market for good, reasonably-priced Mexican food downtown. I liked Zy, and love the space, but am more excited about this place. They do a lot of things right. House-made chips, great salsa, great guac. Complimentary churros for desert. The menu is great. A lot of original dishes, but you can still get an enchilada or tacos. We had the ceviche and Budin (a vegetarian dish). Both were excellent. And, we got out for under $50 (didn't try the margaritas). Nothing else like it downtown - I really hope it takes off.

Yum Yum Yum. This place is a favorite for date night. Atmosphere is fantastic. The service is very friendly and professional. The Enchilada Suizas, Ceviche, Table Side Guacamole, Carne Asada Tacos, and Specials are always superb. Mexican food with a modern/creative flare is soo good. Ok now I'm salivating. Just go.

Food & service were great! Don't miss the fresh guacamole- I don't usually like guacamole (too bland, to many onions, too much cilantro) but this stuff was great thanks to plenty of spices & not an overload of onions (they even left out the nasty cilantro for me & brought a dish of it & extra jalapeños for everyone to add in if they wanted.) I really appreciated never having an empty glass of water (I was really thirsty) and everyone (party of 6) thoroughly enjoyed their food. My only complaints are that it's a bit over priced, the pork I had wasn't very tender, and our complimentary Churros were doughy in the middle. I know that sounds like a lot, but overall it wasn't enough to keep me from going back...just not on a weekly basis because it is kinda pricy (about $18-22+ for an entree).

Just ok but for the price.... go elsewhere. These are the times I resent Yelpers and their too generous ratings. After reading the reviews and the 4 star rating, we decided to give this place a try since Copper Onion had a 2 hour wait. We called ahead at 5:45pm and the woman we spoke to said she'd be willing to seat the two of us if we were gone by 7:15. Yes you heard me right. We arrived a few minutes later to a restaurant that was about 20% full. We were reminded three times of the time limit we were given. Against my own intuition, we stayed and ordered. As for the food, we had the shrimp cocktail. It was lacking in flavor and not a traditional ceviche. The shrimp were small, a little larger than bay shrimp. The flavor it did have came from the unripened mango. We also tried the $10.95 guacamole which they make tableside with 1 whole avocado. I found it to be bland and dumped my salsa in for some added flavor. I ordered the elote but we only had a few bites between the two of us as it was more like corn and mayo than the elote I've come to know in Mexico and San Diego. The special enchiladas were decent but not worth the $20 price tag for 2 average sized enchiladas and some salad quality shrimp. I would say this place is trying to compete with Frida (upscale Mexican) but it's not even close flavor wise. Overall the food was fine but for $100 we won't be going back. To be fair, we also ordered a beer and two drinks which added to check total. I'm not a big Cafe Rio junkie like most people I know but I'd tell you to go there instead because the food is better and a heck of a lot cheaper.

The atmosphere was nice and the service was great. It's within walking distance from the Broadway Theatre which is nice for dinner and a movie. The food is ok but not for the prices they charge. I really enjoyed the pico de gallo. It was good. I've had much better queso fundido. I consider myself a garlic lover but their salsa and rice both had way too much of it. The beans and the specialty cocktail I had were both forgettable. We did like the enchilada of the day. Bottom line is: my wife and I enjoyed our night out and don't regret going but if we are going to drop that kind of cash, there are many better places to go.

This place was very good. It seems good Mexican is hard to find in Utah so I'm glad we found this place. It's definitely not your cheap Mexican restaurant however, the portion sizes and quality of food made the higher prices a little bit easier to swallow. I had the carne asada and it was very good but I would say the real winner was my husband's dish, the cochinta pibil...very, very good and unique. Good food, more more than I think it's worth.

Was in town for a seminar and Alamexo was door to the hotel I was staying at. At first glance place was very clean, simple decor, colors that weren't over the top and high ceilings which make it feel very open. Behind the hostess desk the have two awards saying "Best Restaurant of 2014" and " Best Mexican Restaurant of 2014" being from Arizona and seeing these awards made me have to try this place. Our waiters name was Christian, had very good knowledge of the menu as well as the drinks. His Spanish pronunciation of Spanish words were correct, tho he gave it a little to much of a fake accent than needed, which made us laugh. Nonetheless he was a great waiter. Food was good, being from Arizona I guess I'm a little biased, I have chicken enchiladas, sauce was a little sour but was good overall. They make guacamole fresh at the table which I have never seen anywhere, which is pretty cool and gives the place something you'll always remember it by. Cons: co-worker I was with got her food, the plate was extremely hot but the good itself was really cold. But the manager I believe her name was Susan was quick to come over, even tho we didn't ask for her, and fixed our issues. Great manager skills right there in my eyes Over all I would recommended this place, and if I'm ever back in Salt Lake City I will be returning. ~B~

The table we sat at was at the back and a loud blower of some sort made conversation difficult. I ordered the carne Asada tacos as I'd heard they were better than the fish. The meat was stringy and chewy. It was hard bite into manageable pieces. I also ordered the Elotes de le calle as that had come highly recommended. It was so cold that we all thought it was similar to a coleslaw. I later found out it was supposed to be served hot! The left overs were actually better than the first time around. Over all it seemed rather overpriced and nothing special for Mexican food.

Excellent in every way! We went for lunch. The menu is small but even still I found it a little hard to choose because everything sounded so good. Alamexo presents an excellent selection of Tequila and Mescal which are front and center on the drink list with some unique cocktails on the menu. I'm usually not too keen on table side guacamole, but Alamexo's was actually one of the best, guacamole's I've ever had. They've got it down with a very well balanced approach that lets the avocado shine through. The Crab Salad was simple but very good. Nicely done for a light lunch. The flavors and textures all married well. Not overdressed allowing the mango giving it just a fresh punch while still allowing the crab to shine through. My wife opted for the special Mixto Enchilada and they were excellent. The flavors, textures and presentation were all top notch. Given that I still had room for desert, we opted for the Chocolate Decadence. Topped with Candied Pepitas. Unique in presentation, excellent in form, texture and flavor. We loved it and I'm so glad we made room for desert. What's better with desert, especially chocolate than coffee? Its made to order in a french press. Very dark and rich. An excellent brew. ~m

I'm not sure if my meal was just off but I didn't love it and was definitely NOT impressed. We got the queso which was so-so. Was a little watery and I think Frida blows Alamexo's away. The ceviche wasn't ceviche. It was a sweet red sauce that wasn't good at all. For my main dish I ordered fish tacos. They were so-so... Breading which wasn't necessary and made them feel heavy and needed more mango salsa or another sauce to make them not as dry.

Returned here for ceviche and drinks before heading to another restaurant for a progressive dinner. The ceviche that night was mahi mahi and was quite appealing in the freshness of ingredients. I was however disappointed in the amount of meat; you had to hunt around the other ingredients (jicama, onion, etc.) to find the little chunks of fish. Also the level of spiciness was too high for ceviche. I'll continue to root for Alamexo but admit they could be so much better.

I love this place. As others mention, this place is not for those looking for common tex mex experience. The menu options are original and creative. It is clear the menu has been thought about down to the smallest details and there are many different things to choose from so it's well suited to all different tastes. The tequila options are good, but I'm hoping they expand a bit, it would be nice to see some Don Julio 1942 or Clase Azule on the menu. Nice service and lovely space. I enjoyed Zy and the same attention and care has gone into this current iteration. Nice work and we will be back.

Tried this place out-- I'll admit that I wasn't impressed. The feel of the restaurant is elegant and high end and I love the space with the high ceilings and big windows. However the food was not the caliber I was expecting for the price. It's good Mexican but not great. The portions are your typical amount for a pricier restaurant but the flavor of really good Mexican wasn't there. Their table side guacamole was pretty bland. I tried 3 different types of enchiladas and they were all ok. You are definitely paying for the location and style of the place. Loved the complimentary churros though. That was prob my favorite part. They were awesome.

The cluelessness of the staff really distracts from the exquisite flavors. The food and drinks were truly good but the execution made this an overall unpleasant experience. I would not recommend.

Most enjoyable treat in SLC! Started with the queso sans Chorizo. Not ypur everyday queso. Served in a mini skillet. Margaritas were exceptional and the specialty one with hibiscus well worth a try. Had the corn specialty as a second appetizer and couldnt wait to get home so I could try to replicate it. Entrées again fresh and flavorful. Staff like everyone in SLC very kind. Will be on our list to visit again when in Utah.

Good food, good atmosphere and good service. What more can you ask for, espcially when it's a place that's so close to a hotel. I was hesitant about going here but it was a pleasant surprise.

I can't wait to go back. Great food, great gluten free options also. I wife had the enchiladas suizas and I had mole poblano. Very good, fresh.

Excellent Mexican food in downtown Salt Lake. Fine dining but not too pricy. They make their guacamole table-side, have great margaritas, and amazing entrees. Try the salmon with mole or chicken enchiladas. And make sure to make room for dessert- you'll be so glad you did!

I have to say I was completely bummed to hear ZY was closing and re-emerging as a mexican restaurant. We LOVED everything about ZY and can't believe it wasn't better received in the foodie town SLC is becoming. Now, while I am still in my process of grieving, I will offer this brief review of Alamexo. I was relieved that the restaurant still has the unique ZY feel and the menu is equally inspired (thanks to Chef Lake, I presume). We had the Enchiladas Del Dia (crab and a creamy tomatillo sauce), Short ribs, tacos de pollo, and the steak. All in all, they were delicious. The enchiladas especially so. All the sauces were robust and flavorful. Mom wasn't especially pleased with the tacos since she had to build them herself but they were uniquely plated using a cast iron skillet to serve the taco meat and cheese. The tableside guac was delicious, too. I liked the family style rice and beans served in cute iron bowls with handles. The beans were reminiscent of the days I lived in Guatemala. Totally authentic. Lastly, the churros were perfection. You can't really go wrong with fried dough covered in sugar but these were top notch. Crunchy exterior, gooey interior. Yum. I can't wait to check out the Sunday brunch. I'll miss you ZY but we welcome you, Alamexo and hope you can stick around. The service, as usual, was spot on. Buen provecho!

Meh. This place was forgetful. Salsa was good, but our dishes were blah. Nothing to rant or rave about. The hostess wasn't friendly and I was constantly asking for refills from our server. I won't be going back.

Went in after a lot of other places nearby had long waits. We were pleasantly surprised with excellent guac and perfectly cooked fish tacos. Breading was perfectly light, no to bready and not at all over cooked like most other places. Can't go 5 stars because I feel like its a bit over priced.

First time going to Alamexo, I was so excited about trying this place until I walked in, asked for a table for 8 and the most rude unprofessional host was not about to help me in anyway. Wouldn't push tables together did not offer me a time to wait to see if any of the reservations for the night would even show up when there were plenty of empty tables. I will not be back until there is a friendly accommodating face behind that desk! Alamexo, a question, does the customer come first? Just curious?

Trying to hard to creative when they should stick to executing the originals really well.

This is the third restaurant I have been to at this location. Went for lunch with some coworkers. We sat outside on the patio which is always nice. I had the chicken toquitos and they were good. The service was not good, she was slow .

The menu was a little limited, and the vegetarian options weren't as extensive. However, we had a friend who has a gluten allergy and a red pepper allergy. The manager and staff were amazing!!!!! They came to our table and went through the menu with her to find something she liked. Great customer service!!!

Yummm. The tableside guac tastes so fresh (obviously) and delicious. All the food is so flavorful and the classic mojito hit the spot. I'll definitely be back.

By and large, my Yelp reviews have been free of hyperbole. So, when I say that the food at the Alamexo was the worst I've had in the past year, trust me, I'm not exaggerating. Other than the Guacamole which was memorable for the fact that it consisted of one not-so-ripe avocado and cost $10.95, the remainder of the meal was so bland, why bother naming the dishes; they all tasted the same. As bad as the food was, the service was worse. This location has been a nightmare for a parade of mediocre restaurants. My rating on this most recent reincarnation is DNR do not resuscitate. If you are considering the Alamexo, my suggestion - bring a table cloth and go to Taco Bell for a nicer dining experience.

Very, very good food and drinks. It's a good place to take guests from out of town. Also close to the Broadway theatre, which makes for a nice dinner and movie night.

I love that they have a salsa of the day, it makes me want to go back and try them all! I got the Cochinita Pibil tacos and they were delicious. The meat came in a small cast iron skillet with the mix ins and tortillas on the side which I really liked too. I'd love to go back with more people and get the table side guac!

I found the food flavorful, but overpriced for the quality and quantity you receive. You are paying for the atmosphere and restaurant location. This is a good choice if you are enjoying a night out downtown, but for better flavored Mexican food you could look elsewhere (most locals will know where I am talking about).

We had dinner at Alamexo for the third time tonight and decided to take two friends. While I had hoped the service would improve with time, it's still subpar for the price. To make matters worse, the manager is completely oblivious and has her head stuck in the sand. For example, tonight we waited and waited for service, our plates to be cleared and finally for the check. Deciding that I'd had enough, I asked to speak to the manager. She came to the table and gave some stock, meaningless response. But to make matters worse, when I got home, Alamexo had gone into the opentable system and listed my reservation as cancelled so that I couldn't review their crappy service on opentable. I'm livid and will be calling opentable tomorrow with a copy of my credit card receipt showing that I did dine there this evening and a copy of Alamexo's email stating otherwise. Either way, they're getting the review that they deserve, which is crappy service and an even worse manager which explains the former.

Classy Mexican with gourmet offerings. I highly recommend the table side guacamole and the Enchiladas Suizas. Thin warm fresh chips and homemade churros topped it off perfectly. Salsa was not typical but good.

The Alamexo just opened a week ago. Today I tried the chicken suizas. It was spicier than I expected, but tasted great. I'll go back again, definitely worth a try.

This restaurant was very good overall. I was impressed with the salsa but a little disappointed with the queso. The queso was more like what I think of a a very cheesy fajita. It was ok. I got the pollo tacos and loved that I could put them together myself (awesome for the picky eater). The service was also very friendly and quick. I definitely recommend giving it a try.

Holy Moly Guacamole! Excellent food and fun and trendy setting. The table side guac is a must. Closest thing Utah has to Rosa Mexicano.

SUPER overpriced. Like, incredibly. They make your guacamole at your table, which is real cute. But when you see them use 1 1/2 avacados that you just paid $10.50 for... you realize you are being had. The Budin was terrible, also. My friend had the salmon and she liked it. I get that it's all local and from scratch, and that's great. But it's not good, the menu is very limited (nothing very light), and it's VERY overpriced.

Tonight was our first time at Alamexo and it won't be our last! I got the "enchilada daily special" which was crab enchiladas in a blue corn tortilla with a creamy lime sauce. My husband got the enchilada suisa which appeared to have the same creamy lime sauce as mine, and he loved it. We got the Tres Leches for dessert which was very yummy and then our waiter brought us some churros which were amazing! The chips and salsa was nothing to write home about so next time we will try the table side guacamole. It's great to have something new and different in SLC!

Awful. The owners should have stuck to wine and cheese. I ordered a mojito to start with the guac. The drink was terrible and tasted like nothing but flat sprite. The guac was good, that's pretty hard to mess up though. For my entree I got the Mole Poblano, it was totally bland and tasted nothing like mole. The price was outrageous. I would have rather spent 90 dollars on Red Iguana and fed a family of 10 instead of just my girlfriend and I.

We decided to give the new spot a try one night for dinner. Service was great. Food was good but not nearly as good as expected for the price tag. Although we didn't partake, I was a huge fan of the tableside guacamole--having your guac made fresh right in front of you instead of mass-produced at the beginning of the day is a huge PLUS. Ingredients were all fresh and it looked delicious. If we go again, I will definitely make sure we order it. The chips and salsa were delish. I ordered the Pollo Tacos (adobo marinated chicken with queso Chihuahua--I got it without the pico and salsa) and my boyfriend ordered the Carne Asada tacos. The menu says "all entrees served with house rice and beans for the table" but the dishes that came out looked like it was one serving of rice and beans, not nearly enough for the both of us to have sides with our meals and not nearly enough to justify $17.95 and $19.95 respectively for our meals. The meats were delicious, my only suggestion was that the cheese should have been on top of the meat rather than underneath the pile on the skillet so each taco you make could have a taste of the cheese. Our biggest complaint was the fact that these rather pricey entrees came with very flimsy cheap tortillas (like the kind I can buy myself at the supermarket). As soon as you fill the tortilla with the meat and toppings, it immediately falls apart and the juices leak all over your hands. I would have preferred a bigger, hand-made tortilla to fill the tacos properly with and to better compliment the flavors of the food being used to fill them. I also ordered the Platanos--which are a personal favorite food of mine being Colombian, so I was excited to find a place that served them. They were cooked perfectly, but I could have done without the cream sauce drizzled on top. Regardless, I loved eating them! The best part of the meal was the complimentary homemade churros!! So light and doughy and perfectly sweetened served with a chocolate dipping sauce. So delicious!!

We had an awesome early dinner! The Carne Asada taco's are awesome! Scott, our server, was very friendly and seemed to really enjoy his job. Guacamole was really good and paired perfectly with our margarita's!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
